Yeah, that's what I figured. When I read the original version recently after not having looked at it for more than ten years, I thought the ending was too obvious and maybe I'd do a significant re-write, turning the protagonist carpenter dude, Jeremy, into a really despicable Scrooge and then having him turn a corner. Then I thought, Well, a guy named Dickens already did that and much better than I ever could, so why bother? Then I got another brainwave: turn it into an entirely different kind of story, a psycho noir, and have Jeremy murder Lorenzo and Esperanza with a hammer. Oh, boy. But, fortunately, I ended up saying to myself, Hey, c'mon, it's the holidays.
Like others I knew the likely ending, but I still have tears. Nice story.
